SLANT

Inspired by the undulating hills of where the otways meets the western stony rises, slant looks at how we live within a sloping site without an overuse of traditional hardscape intervention. The vibrant planting palette offers a variety of texture, foliage and flower, and creates a dynamic wilderness that gives year-long interest to the garden.

Often gardens are designed to control and tame, however this garden is designed to complement itself in its wild, untamed structure. This design deliberately avoids the use of hard lines and structures to showcase the pure form of the plants.

The central seating zone ascends out of the slanting garden and exists seamlessly in the natural landscape. This space is designed to encourage a relationship with our organically formed earth, and how we can coexist with unusual and unconventional shaped blocks. The sawn boulders mimic naturally occurring rockscapes and our connection to the hardscapes of the earth. Emerging out of the terrain are three dynamic brick sculptures. A conventional garden material, bricks are instead here used as an uplifting and inspiring art element in the garden.

The water feature replicates a winding creek, making its way through the centre of the garden as a point of focus and calm, as well as providing a gentle melodic element to the zone.

Slant aims to give integrity to a sloping site, and encourage creativity when it comes to planting out a garden. This garden hopes to inspire those are who are dealing with an unusual block to create something meaningful and purposeful that belongs in that space.
